Imagine if the way we think about retirement in the US was completely transformed. Instead of seeing it as a sudden and total break from work, what if we viewed it as a flexible, phased transition filled with assorted ways to spend our time?
Good news – the concept of retirement in the US is evolving. It’s all about making choices that bring about personal fulfillment and a healthy lifestyle. Pursuing hobbies, lifelong learning, contributing to the community via volunteer or paid work, nurturing a rich social network, travel – the sky is the limit.
With several older siblings who have retired or are semi-retired, I’ve seen a wide range of retirement options come to life. My take? There is no right or wrong way to retire; it’s all about what makes sense for you. My sibs and close friends who are starting to take the plunge are providing me with lots of inspiration. For instance, when it comes to the common desire for a second home or lots of travel in retirement:
- A second home is tops of the list for some. It provides for a go-to getaway that feeds their souls with activities they truly enjoy. Inside tip: One couple plans out which home they will be at least one quarter in advance so that their social calendar is active no matter where they are.
- One friend chooses a 3-month short-term rental each year at a lesser-known Caribbean Island so she and her husband get their fill of sailing and beaching.
- A couple of siblings invested in timeshares long ago which provides for a wide range of global locations to visit. They rotate travel companions among family and friends who join in on the excursions. An addition or alternative to timeshare are loyalty programs through the larger hotel chains and airlines.
What about you? Is travel or a second home on your radar in retirement? Who inspires you and how?
