Ready or not, Thanksgiving Thursday is barreling toward us like a gravy boat on wheels, officially launching the holiday season! It’s that magical time when the air is filled with the scent of delicious food, routines are exchanged for unstructured time, and you get to reconnect with people you haven’t seen in a while. The best part? Thanksgiving is a holiday you can celebrate with anyone. It’s a time when friends become family, and family become friends. It’s all about togetherness!
But let’s be real. The holidays aren’t all pumpkin pie, cozy sweaters, and sitting in front of a roaring fire sipping hot apple cider. There’s a dash of chaos sprinkled in, too! Think: traveling on the busiest days of the year, racing truckers delivering last-minute groceries, elbowing your way through the farmers’ market, guests who RSVP at the eleventh hour, and the insatiable demand for stove top burners and the oven. Sound familiar?
Welcome to the holiday jungle where you may encounter challenges and transitions like:
Tradition Overload
Challenge: Balancing old traditions with new ones can feel like juggling cranberries.
Remedy: Add one new tradition each year! This way, you keep things fresh without losing the classics. Consider a vote on which tradition gets the boot next year.
Host Hustle
Challenge: Trying to do everything yourself can turn you into a tormented turkey. On the other hand, offering guests too little guidance when sharing responsibilities can tangle roles like holiday lights.
Remedy: Share the load. Team up with your co-hosts, make a plan, encourage everyone to contribute to the celebration, whether it’s a new dish, game, or playlist. Just don’t ask Aunt Ava to make the stuffing.
Passing the Baton
Challenge: Handing over hosting duties can be trickier than passing the squash soup without a spill.
Remedy: Offer to be a behind-the-scenes mentor, helper, or official taste-tester. Let your successor shine but be ready to rescue the gingered yams without fanfare if needed.
Family Dynamics
Challenge: The smells, tastes, sights, sounds, and people you gather with over the holidays can stir up old family vibes including the ones you thought were buried with last year’s wishbone.
Remedy: Prep by identifying triggers, setting boundaries, and planning your escape route like the bathroom as a haven. During the festivities, practice self-care, redirect spicy conversations, and take a timeout if needed. Afterward, reflect on your personal growth and reward yourself with an extra piece of pie.
Life’s Big Changes
Challenge: Returning to school, starting a new job, retiring, or other life shifts can make the holidays feel like a whole new ballgame.
Remedy: Use the holiday as a check-in. Celebrate progress, swap stories, and gather fresh perspectives. Who knows? Your cousin’s advice might prove to be useful. And support others when confiding in you about their transitions.
Grieving the Loss of a Loved One
Challenge: Missing someone special? The holidays can surface grief.
Remedy: Honor their memory by sharing stories, cooking their favorite dish, playing their favorite song, lighting a candle, routing for their favorite football team, or raising a toast in remembrance. Healing often happens through celebration of life.
Absent Guests
Challenge: Not everyone can make it to the table, and sometimes the holiday feels a little emptier.
Remedy: Pick up the phone! A quick call or video chat can bring distant loved ones into the celebration. Bonus points for creative group selfies.
The Much-Needed Pause
Challenge: Life can be hectic, and the holidays can feel like a whirlwind too. Sometimes you need a break from the break.
Remedy: Bake some relaxation and “me time” into the holiday. Whether it’s a nature walk, a bathtub soak, meditation, or a nap, make sure everyone gets a chance and has a space to recharge. Remember: even Santa takes a cookie break.
So, what holiday hurdles are you anticipating this year? Or maybe you’ve conquered some in the past? Share your stories and tips. Let’s make this season the most joyful (and least stressful) one yet. And if all else fails, just blame the turkey.
