Let’s talk about what happens once you’ve moved past phase 1 along the transition journey – the time when everything feels like it’s ending. You’ve clarified how a situation or change affects you, worked through a myriad of feelings, tried to see the silver lining, and maybe even toasted to what’s behind you.
Now you’re stepping into phase 2, the land of experimentation. This is where you get to try things out before you decide which direction to go. Choice is awesome, right? But let’s be honest: too many choices can feel downright paralyzing.
I remember when I tried to furnish my first apartment. I headed to Gardner, MA, where there are endless discount furniture outlets – seriously, it felt like I was wandering through football fields of couches and chairs. I had a tight budget and a list of must-haves (couch, kitchen table, bed frame), but no real clue how to choose. I hadn’t thought about what sort of vibe I wanted – what feelings I wanted my home to have, what colors or styles would suit me, or even if things would fit in my space. The result? I bought a couch that, honestly, I regretted within a year. If only I’d have had some kind of vision or mood board to guide me! It would have saved me some headaches, second-guessing, and money.
So, in phase 2 of any transition, it really helps to imagine how you want things to look or feel on the other side. Set some goals, picture your ideal outcomes, and get clear on what matters most to you. Then you can start brainstorming options and notice what feels right. Whether you start with a vision and narrow down the ideas or explore a bunch of options to clarify your vision, trimming the list early on can help you avoid that all-too-familiar sense of being overwhelmed. Fewer choices can lead to less confusion and more confidence. Looking back, I know this would’ve made my furniture selections so much easier!
So, the next time you find yourself at the crossroads of options, just remember: a little daydreaming, envisioning outcomes, and some intentional vetting of ideas can make a world of difference.
